Its different formulations allow it to be matched to the type of body and to the thermal cycle of each plant.

What is back or rib engobe for?

Its function is to separate the piece from the roller during firing. Applied to the underside of the body, it prevents sticking at high temperature, protects the roller from wear and prevents material drag that would cause defects on the visible face and soiling inside the kiln.

In its purpose. Face engobe prepares a light, uniform base for glazing and affects the final appearance. Back engobe is not about appearance but about behaviour in the kiln: it must withstand contact with the roller without melting or sticking.
