Barium carbonate is used in ceramic frits and glazes, where it acts as a flux and helps to achieve a uniform gloss. It is also used in the glass industry, where barium oxide increases the refractive index and density of the glass.

Why is barium carbonate added to tile and brick bodies?

To prevent efflorescence. Clays contain soluble salts that migrate to the surface with the water and crystallise on drying, leaving white deposits. Barium carbonate reacts with those sulfates and converts them into insoluble compounds, so they no longer travel to the visible face.

It acts as a flux in the medium and high temperature range, and contributes to a uniform gloss in the glaze. In certain formulations it is also used to obtain matt finishes by controlling crystallisation during cooling.

Barium carbonate must be handled in accordance with the instructions in its safety data sheet, applying the usual dust control and respiratory protection measures during dosing operations. We provide the product’s safety documentation together with the supply.
