What is bentonite and which mineral is it made of?

Bentonite is a natural clay whose main constituent is montmorillonite, a layered silicate. That layered structure explains its behaviour: it allows water to enter between the layers, which gives rise to its swelling and colloidal properties.

In green sand moulding it acts as a binder: it coats the sand grains and gives them cohesion and plasticity, so that the mould holds its shape during pouring. Its capacity to retain water is what maintains those properties throughout the moulding cycle.

The difference lies in the predominant exchangeable cation. Sodium bentonite has a considerably higher swelling capacity, so it is used where viscosity and binding power are required. Calcium bentonite swells less and is aimed at absorption and bleaching applications. It is worth confirming this when defining the application.
