Frequently Asked Questions About the Calcined Alumina

What is the difference between calcined alumina and white corundum?

Both products are aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) and share the same CAS number, but not the same form. Calcined alumina is produced by calcination and is used as a raw material in ceramic and refractory formulations. White corundum is fused and crystallised alumina, and its hardness makes it suitable for abrasive and surface treatment applications. The choice depends on whether you need to add alumina to a composition or require abrasive capability.

Aluminium oxide combines a very high melting point with chemical stability against slags and furnace atmospheres. This is why it is used in refractory bricks, furnace linings and crucibles, where the material must retain its properties cycle after cycle at high temperature without reacting with its contents.

It acts on the mechanical strength and dimensional stability of the fired body, and contributes to the surface hardness of the glaze. In glazes and frits it is also used to adjust the viscosity of the melt and the behaviour of the coating during firing.
