Is magnesium carbonate the same as magnesite?

Yes. Magnesite is the name of the natural mineral whose composition is magnesium carbonate (MgCO₃). In industry both terms are used for the same material, and they share the same CAS number.

On calcination, magnesium carbonate releases CO₂ and produces magnesium oxide, a material with a very high melting point and basic character. That basic character is what allows it to resist attack by steelmaking slags, which would degrade an acidic lining.

It acts as a flux in the upper temperature range and takes part in controlling the coefficient of thermal expansion of the glaze. In certain compositions it is used to achieve matt finishes, since it promotes crystallisation of the coating during cooling.
