What advantage does nepheline syenite have over a feldspar?

Its higher alkali content and lower proportion of free silica. That makes it a more active flux: it allows the same glassy phase to be reached at a lower temperature, or the firing cycle to be shortened, which translates into energy savings in the kiln.

Not exactly. Nepheline is the mineral, a sodium and potassium aluminosilicate. Nepheline syenite is the rock that contains it together with feldspars. The industrial product comes from that rock, which is why both terms are used interchangeably in the raw materials trade.

Not unit for unit. Because it supplies more alkalis and more alumina, the substitution requires recalculating the composition and checking the result against the actual firing curve, particularly because of its effect on the coefficient of thermal expansion and on the fit between glaze and body.
