What does potassium contribute compared with sodium in a glass or a glaze?

Both are alkaline fluxes, but they do not behave in the same way. Potassium produces a melt of higher viscosity and a wider working range, and generally gives greater gloss. Sodium melts more aggressively and has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion. The choice affects the fit between glaze and body.

Because potassium salts of fatty acids are more soluble than sodium salts. That higher solubility is what produces soft or paste-consistency soaps and liquid formulations, as opposed to the hard bars obtained with sodium compounds.

Yes, potassium carbonate absorbs moisture from the air. It should be kept in a closed container in a dry place, avoiding leaving bags open between dosing operations, since water uptake can cause caking and affect dosing by weight.
