Both are alkaline fluxes, but they do not behave in the same way. Potassium produces a melt of higher viscosity and a wider working range, and generally gives greater gloss. Sodium melts more aggressively and has a higher coefficient of thermal expansion. The choice affects the fit between glaze and body.
