Quartz

Quartz for Industrial Applications
Ground quartz for industrial applications, available in a range of particle sizes (120, 200, 300 and 500 mesh), with supply in bags, big bags and bulk.
Description
At PILATO, we grind quartz in Spain following a process that includes drying the mineral silica and subsequent industrial milling to obtain particle sizes of 120, 200, 300 and 500 mesh, in line with our customers’ requirements Supported by a company-wide, integrated quality management system and a specialised operations team, we ensure immediate product availability and the operational agility required to meet each customer’s needs. Our efficient operations and logistics enable us to integrate successfully into our customers’ supply chains, both in Spain and internationally, contributing to their operational performance.

Ground quartz is regularly used in additives for ceramic glazes, ceramic frits and refractory materials, as well as in the manufacture of sealing adhesives. In a ceramic body it acts as a filler: it reduces shrinkage during drying and firing and provides dimensional stability to the piece. In glazes it is the main network former, that is, the base on which fluxes and opacifiers act. It is also used as a mineral filler in compositions requiring hardness and chemical resistance.

We supply the product in 25 kg bags, big bags and bulk, coordinating delivery times and volumes to facilitate its integration into processes already validated by our customers.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Quartz

What is the role of quartz in a ceramic body?

It acts as a filler. Being a non-plastic material, it reduces the shrinkage the piece undergoes during drying and firing, which lowers the risk of warping and cracking, and provides dimensional stability to the finished product.

Because silica is the glass network former: it is the component that creates the structure of the glass. Fluxes lower its melting temperature and opacifiers modify its appearance, but the network itself comes from the quartz, and its proportion determines the hardness and chemical resistance of the coating.

Quartz is crystalline silica, and handling it as a powder is regulated because of its status as a respirable dust. It must be handled with the dust control and respiratory protection measures set out in its safety data sheet, which we provide together with the supply.
