Uses and Applications
Thanks to its high tinting strength, red iron oxide is used in the manufacture of pigments and colours for the ceramic sector, as well as in industrial paints, coloured cements and construction materials. It is the reference pigment for colouring mortars, concrete and precast units because of its stability against light and against the alkalinity of cement. In ceramics it is also used in engobes and bodies, and in the formulation of anticorrosive primers.

Why is red oxide more stable in firing than the yellow grade?
Because the red grade is already iron(III) oxide, Fe₂O₃, the form into which the yellow grade evolves on dehydrating. Having no water to lose, it does not change tone as it passes through that temperature range, which makes it more predictable in firing processes.
