Uses and Applications
Rutile flour is used as a raw material that adds whiteness to the composition of frits, glazes and ceramic pigments, and in the manufacture of welding electrodes, where rutile forms part of the coating, stabilising the arc and generating the slag that protects the weld bead. Thanks to its already ground particle size it can be added directly to the composition, with no need for prior grinding by the customer.

It performs two functions. It stabilises the arc, which means easier striking and a more regular weld, and on melting it generates the slag that protects the bead during solidification and later detaches easily. It is the component that gives rutile-type electrodes their name.

When should flour be chosen instead of rutile sand?
When the process does not include its own grinding stage. They are the same mineral and share the same CAS number: the flour is already ground and can be added directly to the composition, whereas the sand is suitable if the customer grinds the material or prefers a free-flowing product for dosing.

Why is it said to add whiteness if rutile itself has colour?
Because in the fired composition titanium dioxide acts as an opacifier: its high refractive index scatters light and produces the white effect. The colour of the raw mineral does not predict the result in the glaze, which depends on the formulation and the firing cycle.
