What is the role of feldspar in a ceramic body?

It acts as a flux. During firing it supplies the alkalis that lower the temperature at which the glassy phase appears, and that phase is what binds the particles of the body, providing mechanical strength and low porosity to the finished piece.

Because the alkali cation determines how the melt behaves. Sodium melts more aggressively and over a narrower range, which suits fast single-firing cycles. This should be checked against each plant’s actual firing curve before replacing one flux with another.

It supplies alumina and alkalis at the same time. Alumina improves the chemical durability and strength of the glass, and the alkalis keep the melting temperature within manageable values. That combination is why it is used as a source of alumina in glass compositions.
