Why choose anatase rather than rutile?
Both are titanium dioxide (TiO₂) but they crystallise differently and have their own CAS numbers. Anatase is selected when the criterion is whiteness and a cooler tone. Rutile is the form that is stable at high temperature and produces warmer tones. They are not interchangeable in a formulation without reviewing the resulting colour.

What does titanium dioxide contribute to a glaze?
It provides opacity and whiteness. Its high refractive index scatters the light passing through the coating, and that scattering is what prevents the body from showing through. In certain compositions it also promotes crystal formation during cooling, giving matt or satin finishes.

Does anatase convert to rutile during firing?
Yes. Above a certain temperature anatase converts irreversibly to rutile, the thermodynamically stable form. The optical effect of anatase in a fired glaze therefore depends on the thermal cycle of the process, and should be checked against each plant’s actual firing curve.
