Uses and Applications
White corundum is fused and crystallised aluminium oxide, and its hardness explains its two families of use. As an abrasive and surface treatment material it is used in blasting, lapping and grinding, where a grain with high cutting capacity and low contamination of the treated part is required. In ceramic and refractory materials it is added to compositions that must withstand abrasion and high temperature, such as linings and technical parts.

Why is it called white corundum?

Because of its colour and its origin. It is aluminium oxide obtained by fusion that crystallises as corundum, and its white shade reflects the absence of the oxides that colour other grades. That light colour is also an indication that it does not add appreciable metallic contamination to the treated surface.

Both are aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃) and share the same CAS number, but calcined alumina is produced by calcination and used as a raw material in formulations, whereas white corundum is fused alumina, with a hard, angular grain intended for abrasion.

Why is it preferred to sand blasting in some applications?
Because corundum is considerably harder, which translates into greater cutting capacity and more reuse cycles of the abrasive. In addition, not being a siliceous material, it avoids exposure to respirable crystalline silica associated with sand blasting, which is restricted in many countries.
