Thanks to its high tinting strength, yellow iron oxide is used in the manufacture of pigments and colours for the ceramic sector, as well as in industrial paints, coloured cements and construction materials. It is likewise used to colour mortars, concrete and precast units, where it provides ochre and yellow tones that are stable against light and against the alkalinity of cement. Its thermal behaviour differs from that of red iron oxide, which should be borne in mind when defining the firing cycle.

What is the difference between yellow and red iron oxide?
What is the difference between yellow and red iron oxide?
Their chemical composition. The yellow grade is an iron oxide hydroxide, FeO(OH), while the red is iron(III) oxide, Fe₂O₃. They have different CAS numbers. On heating, the yellow grade loses water and shifts towards reddish tones, so the final colour depends on the temperature of the process.

Does it keep its colour through a ceramic firing?
It depends on the temperature. Above a certain point the oxide hydroxide dehydrates and evolves into red oxide, so the yellow grade is mainly used in applications that do not reach that transformation, such as cements, mortars and paints. For stable colour at high firing temperatures, pigments formulated for that range are used instead.
